A RETREAT WITH GERARD MANLEY HOPKINS

Annual Hopkins Society Lecture

with Fr Billy Hewett SJ

July 18-22, 2011

Gerard Manley Hopkins

Fr Hewett will be presenting a number of poems with some reflections of his own.  The period of retreat will allow the poems of Hopkins to take us deeper into relationship with the Creator God.

This is a themed retreat, not an individually guided retreat.

The retreat will be in silence as an aid to prayer and you will be encouraged to write and be creative.  Participants are encouraged to bring their own copy of the collected poems of Hopkins. To buy a copy of the prefered Oxford version click...

Spring Blossoms in St Beuno's

PIED BEAUTY

Glory be to God for dappled things -
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim;
Fresh-firecoal chestnut-falls; finches' wings;
Landscape plottted and pieced - fold, fallow, and plough;
And all trades, their gear and tackle and trim.

All things counter, original, spare, strange;
Whatever is fickle, freckled (who knows how?)
With swift, slow; sweet, sour; adazzle, dim;
He fathers-forth whose beauty is past change;
Praise him.
