IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF IGNATIUS - 4 days in Loyola

LOYOLA - XAVIER - PAMPLONA

We fly from the UK and arrive in Northern Spain a couple of hours later.  We then take our private bus to Loyola where we are ready for a good night's sleep in this quiet setting.

We spend four days in Loyola, during which time we hope to visit:

The Holy House of Loyola, the Santa Casa, the family house of Iñigo.
We shall arrange to celebrate Mass in the Chapel of the Conversion.

Loyola is situated in a lovely valley on the river Urola.  Weather here in November is often cloudy and wet, so be prepared for the glimpses of the magnificent scenery between the banks of mist.

Group in the Chapel of the Conversion

We shall take a walking tour of Azpeitia and take in the house of the blacksmith's wife, Maria de Garin, where Ignatius spent the first few years of his life.

We shall also visit the Parish Church of St Sebastian in the nearby town of Azpeitia. This is the church where Ignatius was baptised. We see the original font.

We also visit the Hospital where Ignatius stayed on his return to Loyola after his time in Manresa.

Azpeitia by the River Urola and 15th Century Houses

We hope to celebrate Mass in the Hermitage of Olatz where Ignatius prayed. This is within easy walking distance of our hotel and is a very special quiet place.

Weather permitting, we shall offer a walk along the River Urola to the town of Azcoitia where Ignatius' mother came from to see her house.

We visit the walls of Pamplona on our trip across the North of Spain to Manresa.

Hermitage of Olatz

We shall take a day trip to Javier the castle home of St Francis Xavier, where Ignatius visited.

The famous smiling Christ on the cross a 13th Century carving in the chapel painted with the dance of death is unique and would have been familar to Francis Xavier and seen by Ignatius.
