FULL SPIRITUAL EXERCISES IN THREE, TEN DAY SECTIONS OVER THREE YEARS

The Visitation by Rory Geoghegan

These retreats cover the material of the full 30 day Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius Loyola in three, ten day retreats in three years. This retreat is conducted at approximately the same time each year. The idea is that those who would like to do the Exercises yet cannot manage to dedicate 30 days at one go might well be able to manage three 10 day slots.

The retreat will vary in presentation from three individual eight day retreats which are both complete in themselves and have no specific theme. This retreat follows the themes of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius and is only completed in the third year.

Further details about the Exercises >>

We therefore ask people to apply only if they plan to come to St Beuno’s to do the retreat for the three, ten day sections.
The retreat is completed approximately two years and two weeks after starting.

The retreat will be divided into the First Week of the Spiritual Exercises in the first year, the Second Week of the Spiritual Exercises in the second year, and the Third and Fourth Weeks of the Spiritual Exercises in the third year.

Because of the commitment to three years, participants are required to have previously experienced a silent, individually guided, Ignatian retreat of at least six days duration. We also expect participants to be willing to do some prayer at home between retreats at St Beuno’s.

The advantages of doing the Exercises of St Ignatius over three years rather than in one 30 day spell are:

• Easier integration into the holiday year for those who are working
• The cost is divided over a three year period.
• We shall be giving suggestions on prayer for the year, so there will be an advantage, particularly between the second and third unit of the Exercises when a leisurely progress through the Gospels can be made.
• There will be a chance to let the different elements of the Exercises deepen between the units.
• If for any reason the retreatant and director feel it better not to continue with the Exercises, this is easier to accommodate than when committed to the full thirty days.

The disadvantages are:

• Loss of continuity and rhythm
• A possibly less intense experience
• The chance of having different directors

We hope to offer the participants the same retreat giver for the three retreat units, but we cannot guarantee this as there will inevitably be some unavoidable changes of personnel over such a time. There is likely too to be natural wastage of retreatants which will not justify as many retreat givers over 2nd and thrid year.

Projected dates are:

Full Exercises begun in 2007: 2nd section in 2008 - July 4th-15th; 3rd Section 2009 - July 3rd-14th

Full Exercises to begin in 2008: 1st section July 31st - 11th August.

We ask for a standard retreat Booking Form plus a short 'life story'.
