Understanding the Spiritual Exercises

November 21- December 18, 2010
November 20 - December 16, 2011

Sunset over Rhyl

You may just want to understand the Exercises for your own benefit or it may be that you wish to work in religious formation, to help others in making life choices and discerning the will of God. This is a programme for people who wish to deepen their understanding of spiritual direction and retreat giving in the Ignatian tradition and presupposes that participants have experienced the full Exercises either in its 30 day form or in daily life. This programme began last year and was generally well-recieved. With a few tweeks and changes to improve it we shall be offering it again in 2009.

We shall consider
  • There will be a practical element to the programme with a look at listening skills and other aspects of spiritual guidance in the Ignatian Tradition.

  • The Dynamics of the four weeks of the Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius

  • Dealing with trauma and psychological issues arising out of prayer and the Exercises.

  • Ignatian Discernment

  • "Looking at Ignatius's Text"
Whatever the setting, making and giving the Spiritual Exercises are very personal processes, shaped by the life-stories and personalities of the individuals involved. But what are the links between what happens in a retreat and Ignatius Loyola's sixteenth-century text? How should a contemporary retreat-giver be drawing on the book of the Exercises?
Fr Philip Endean SJ, from Campion Hall, Oxford, will lead an exploration of such questions by looking at various key elements in the Ignatian process through a mixture of formal inputs, case-studies and role plays.

  • How to encourage those you are accompanying to reflect on their own life experiences.

  • Sexuality issues in spiritual guidance with Fr Brendan Callaghan SJ

  • Supervision of the spiritual director/retreat giver with Ruth Holgate

  • How to adapt the dynamic of the Exercises to shorter retreats and Spiritual Direction.

This programme will be taught using a variety of methods: presentations from the team, seminars, small group work, private study and practical exercises. We shall build upon and develop your own skills and understanding.

This programme will involve teaching days from Monday to Friday. Saturday is reserved for private study and Sunday a day of rest. Participants are therefore free from Friday evening until Monday morning each week.
